The Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca) is
a small duck (10 - 16 inches; wingspan: 24 inches) overall grey
with a cinnamon brown head and iridescent green patch through
eye to back of head. It has a green speculum. The breast is buff
and spotted. The voice is a repeated whistle.
As with many ducks, the preferred habitat
is marshes, ponds and lakes. The nest is made in tall grass near
water and lined with down. There are 8 to 15 white or creamy
buff eggs. The incubation period is from 21 to 23 days. The young
fledge in 34 days. There is generally one brood per season.
These ducks feed on seeds, green plant
material and sometimes aquatic invertebrates.
